Abstract: The ancient tombstones in the cemetery of the Protestant Church of St. Peter and Paul in Stotternheim deliver insight into the history of the burial culture of the 18th and the 19th century. The tombstones form an ensemble in the park-like green areas of the northern churchyard. The typical neo-classical tombs of sandstone surprise by their monumental dimensions, great variety of shapes and a diverse inventory of funerary symbols and inscriptions. They consist of several architectural components (layers) and resemble therefore small-scale architecture, whose surface was probably painted.
In the study of the present art works, the tombstones are examined in terms of their design, construction, sculptural creation and workmanship and historical exposure. In addition, ornamental vases believed to be lost could be recovered. The entire ensemble of tombs are documented photographically, and their lateral surface is determined. By applying composite illustration, general views of all sides were created which will serve as mapping basis in the future.
In the assessment of the current condition, the extensive damages are documented and evaluated. The prevailing types of damage are scaling and delamination, sanding, thin black layers and biological colonisation, which result in complex damage processes due to their superposition. The detailed measurement of the damage surface documents any observed kind of damage and allows

the explicit retrieval of the quantity of damages depending on the location, side or exposure. Overall, quantity and degree of damages are very distinctive, which results in an urgent need for conservation.
As causes for the damage, missing foundations, salt and moisture loads can be identified. Furthermore, material-specific properties as well as the sculptural processing and workmanship of surfaces, including oily paints, are initiators for damage processes.
A preliminary concept of measures provides guiding recommendations for conservation measures, the methodical approach for the execution, accompanying analyses and preventive conservation measures. On the basis of the prepared mapping of damage surfaces, the exact quantity of measures can be determined and used for the estimation of cost. Thus a basis for the establishment of a substantial concept of measures is created.
